Off The Cob

A site consisting of editorials from a fan who has followed Nebraska football for over fifty years. Catch the latest off the beaten path, off the wall, strikingly different thoughts from Lyle Harmon.

The truth is I’m like many other Husker fans. I don’t have access to the football coaches or the players. I’m not a media member who attends games or press conferences. I’m not a former player or part of a Husker inner circle. I’m not a reporter, rather I express my viewpoints or opinions on various topics in order to provoke thought and engage my audience. I’m like most of you, willing to share my thoughts and feelings on Husker football. Join me!

Editorials will be posted each week all year long. You can also find ‘Off the Cob’ at Carriker Chronicles.

Dissecting Matt Rhule

Let me start by saying I have never once suggested Matt Rhule be fired. I’ve said all along that I think he is the right man for the job. But after the last two games I think his coaching abilities are being scrutinized, and frankly, it’s justified…….

Is This the Final Straw

It’s the morning after the Oregon game. And if you’re a Nebraska Cornhusker fan like me, you find yourself lost and confused. You had spent the entire week, hell season, believing in something. You had convinced yourself it was real, only to find nothing could be further from the truth…….

Why Nebraska Defeats Oregon

Before the season I said Nebraska would go 8-4 with losses to Indiana, Oregon, Ohio State and Iowa. But after their performance against Indiana and what I’ve seen from Oregon this season, I’ve changed my mind. I’m not saying this team will go to the CFP, but with a win…….

Depth Charts – Nebraska vs Oregon

We’re half-way through the season and Nebraska has stayed surprisingly healthy. At this point there have been no season ending injuries. Let’s hope that continues. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has often said a player’s greatest asset is availability. So, he made it a priority during the offseason…….

The Cob’s Best Games Week 7

We continue to see the rankings turnover with teams posting big wins or losing games they weren’t expected to. Texas dropped from No.1 to No.7 after a loss to Oklahoma. LSU dropped from No.11 to No.22 after losing to Kentucky, and Oregon dropped out of the top 25……..

6 Things to Fix Before Oregon

We saw our Husker’s dominate three quarters of football against Curt Cignetti and his 6th ranked Hoosiers Saturday, and even though there were 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts most of the day, the last twelve minutes of the game took the wind out of every Husker fan’s sails……

With Indiana Win, there is No Dilemma

After Anthony Colandrea’s 39-yard run for a touchdown and putting Nebraska up 17 to 6 with 12 minutes left in the game, I found myself working towards a potential dilemma. With a win over the national champion Hoosiers, would I finally be fully bought in on this Nebraska…….

Indiana’s Offense vs Nebraska’s Blackshirts

Gary Sharp of the Omaha World Hearld appeared on the Average Joe Sports Show Wednesday and posed the question, “If Nebraska plays the best they can play, and Indiana does too, what does that look like?” That’s an important question, even for Husker fans who don’t……

Indiana’s Defense vs Nebraska’s Offense

Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff will be in Lincoln on Saturday, and this will be the first time both Indiana and Nebraska have been in the spotlight this season. You better believe that won’t be missed by Curt Cignetti, as this will be his chance to make a statement……

Depth Charts Nebraska – Indiana

The Nebraska depth chart continues to list a few “ORs”. However, we gained back an “OR” on the offensive line and there is still one on the defensive line, linebacker, and nickel. According to OC Dana Holgorsen running back Jamal Rule will play against Indiana…..

The Cob’s Best Games Week 6

I said I wasn’t feeling too confident with my picks last week when I went out on a limb with a couple. I missed the Virgina Tech, Michigan, Florida, Iowa, and Virginia games to finish 7-5. My worst week so far. In my defense, Virgina Tech…..

Welcome to installment No. 16 of ‘The Cob’s Archive Dive’, where each week, I’ll share headlines and excerpts from past articles printed in the Falls City Journal. Hopefully you’ll find a piece of Husker football history that makes you feel the sights and sounds of gameday.:….

Spectacularly Beautiful – Spectacularly Ugly

This Nebraska team has a way of taking fans breath away. Whether it’s the dazzling Anthony Colandrea scrambling down field for 55 yards or seeing an opponent’s wide receiver streak 65 yards untouched for a touchdown, you’ll hear a simultaneous hush from the multitudes, followed by a deep sigh….

Maryland Terrapins vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

You may not realize it, but this game has been red circled and talked about since the schedule came out. It wasn’t just Nebraska fans either, college football know-it-alls across the country looked at the Huskers 2026 schedule and all proclaimed the same thing – “If Nebraska beats….

Depth Charts Nebraska – Maryland

The Nebraska depth chart continues to list a few “ORs”. However, there are no longer any listed on the offensive line and there is only one on the defensive line. This is the first season for new injury reporting rules for the Big Ten. The conference requires….

The Cob’s Best Games Week 5

Games of note last week were Oregon’s victory over USC, LSU’s spanking of Texas A&M, Georgia’s domination of what we already suspected was a bad Oklahoma team, and Iowa’s last second victory over Michigan, which can only be described as karma. Texas squeaked by Tennessee and Northwestern kept…..

An Ugly but Satisfying Win for Nebraska

Nebraska not only dispatched Michigan State Saturday with a 31-13 victory, but they exorcised a couple of old demons as well. It was Nebraska’s first win to open conference play since 2019, and Anthony Colandrea became the first Husker quarterback to win in East Lansing since Taylor Martinez…..

Michigan State, a Must-Win

Every game on Nebraska’s schedule is not a must-win game, but the Michigan State game Saturday is just that. There are several fans who are reluctant to agree this is a different Nebraska team. If they don’t win this one, those fans will be right, same old Huskers….

Depth Charts Nebraska – Michigan State

The Nebraska depth chart continues to be stuck in neutral and covered with “ORs”. Michigan State does not release an official depth chart, so we’ll go with a 2-deep depth chart and call it good. This is the first season for new injury reporting rules…..

The Cob’s Weekly Archive Dive No. 14

Welcome to installment No. 14 of ‘The Cob’s Archive Dive’, where each week, I’ll share headlines and excerpts from past articles printed in the Falls City Journal. Hopefully you’ll find a piece of Husker football history that makes you feel the sights and sounds of gameday…….

The Cob’s Best Games Week 4

The Cob’s Best Games Week 4 In week 2 the big upsets were Texas coming back to take down Ohio State and Oregon falling to Oklahoma State. Last week the upset was Kentucky dumping Texas A&M at home. The Ole Miss versus LSU game lived up to the billing, and surprises but not upsets……

Huskers Remain Unchallenged

I said before the game that North Dakota would be the best team Nebraska faced in the non-conference. And I wasn’t the only one, head coach Matt Rhule talked the Fighting Hawks up, saying, “I think the football team we’re playing against is as well coached, disciplined, well playing…….

Huskers Remain Unchallenged

North Dakota Fighting Hawks vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

Ohio and Bowling Green may be from the MAC Conference and Nebraska may have outscored them 105-28 in their first two games, and North Dakota may be an FCS school, but Nebraska fans better not doubt the football played up north. North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota……..

Nebraska and North Dakota Depth Charts

When the Huskers first depth chart against Ohio came out people were a little taken back with the number of “ORs” listed. When the depth chart for Bowling Green came out fans thought there might be fewer “ORs”, if any at all. But they were surprised yet again…….

Welcome to installment No. 13 of ‘The Cob’s Archive Dive’, where each week, I’ll share headlines and excerpts from past articles printed in the Falls City Journal. Hopefully you’ll find a piece of Husker football history that makes you feel the sights and sounds of gameday……..

The Cob’s Best Games Week 3

Last week I talked about the Big Ten’s poor performance against the MAC Conference. But in week 2 they took a haymaker on the chin with Minnesota being dismantled by Mississippi State, Illinois losing to Duke, Texas taking down Ohio State, and the real shocker, Oregon losing 31-39…….

Husker Army Podcast with Off the Cob

Yes, that’s right, the Husker Army Podcast has invited me, Lyle Harmon of ‘Off the Cob’ to join them as we recap the Bowling Green – Nebraska game. The Huskers took care of business. So, now it’s time to “FALL IN!!” …. and find out…….

Nebraska Fails to Humble Heisman Coach

The Cornhuskers dismantled former Heisman winner Eddie George’s team Saturday night in Lincoln, winning 56-7. The Huskers performed to expectations for three quarters, racking up 546 total yards of offense and holding the Falcons scoreless. Once again, the Dana Holgorsen coached offense was well balanced, passing for…….

Bowling Green Falcons vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska has big problems brewing. Bowling Green is rolling into town on Saturday night and OC Dana Holgorsen and staff must figure out not only who is going to touch the ball, but how. On top of that, Rob Aurich and Matt Rhule are surely discussing…….

Nebraska and Bowling Green Depth Charts

Nebraska’s depth chart changed very little this week and there is still 14 “Ors” listed. One position of note was defensive end. Earlier in the week Mac Markway was added to the depth chart as the fourth defensive end. However, as of Wednesday, Markway announced…….

Best Games Week 2

Week 1 wasn’t the best week of football. Those are yet to come. And maybe it’s just me, but it seemed there was a greater separation between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ in week 1. However, that can’t be said when looking at the MAC versus the Big Ten……

Huskers Slop Their Way to a Win

If you’re from Nebraska and you hear the word ‘sloppy’ your first thought usually isn’t Husker football, its rain, slush, and muddy roads. And those conditions typically don’t happen when the temperature is 100° with the sun beating down. But evidently conditions were perfect Saturday for sloppy…….

Ohio Bobcats vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

Frank Solich will set high above Tom Osborne field tomorrow and take in two of his former teams battling on the gridiron. Those dressed in red know Frank won’t openly cheer for the Huskers. He doesn’t have to. They know where his heart is. Those who…….

Week 1 Depth Chart Questions

Nebraska released its official depth chart for Week 1 Monday. So, were there any surprises? That depends on who you talk to. There were some names listed I didn’t expect to see and a couple that were absent that sparked questions…….

Best Games Week 1

We got just enough out of Week 0 to make our college football taste buds water. Now for Week 1, not a dream schedule that will knock your socks off, but worth looking forward to after 7 months of hibernation. I used to pick the top ten games…….

NU Position Groups 2026 – Defensive Backs

The defensive backs and the secondary play for the Huskers last season was the best part of the defense. And I believe they’ll be as good or better this season. But for different reasons. There is one simple truth when talking about Nebraska’s pass defense in…….

Big Ten Win – Loss Records 2026

When you take on the task of ranking the Big Ten you can very easily find yourself going down the rabbit hole. I’ve had to work extremely hard not to let that happen or else this could end up being one of those 4,000-word 17-minute snooze fest reads. Sometimes…….

NU Position Groups 2026 – Linebackers

The theme for Aurich throughout his defense is to have at least six players at each position that he can rotate. The linebacker position is no different. And again, everybody on the roster is listed as a linebacker, when the truth is there are “Mike” backers and “Will” backers……

The Cob’s Weekly Archive Dive No. 10

Week 0, we get the worst week of football in 2026 right out of the gate. But stop and remember, the 2026 football season consists of 948 games over 149 days. Umm, football heaven. Due to week 0 being so lame, I only picked three games. But…….

The Cob’s 300th Article @ Carriker Chronicles

I will give you a defensive litmus test. As Husker fans we pride ourselves on defense. We are all in on the ‘Blackshirts’ and the tradition they bring to Nebraska. And if you’re my age, you witnessed some of the greatest defenses in Husker history……..

NU Position Groups 2026 – Defensive Ends

Much like the defensive tackle spot, Aurich wants six players he can rotate in-and-out to keep fresh and give offensive tackles different looks. Something we didn’t see last season was guys showing different moves to get to the passer. That won’t happen this year with Manning coaching this group…….

The Cob’s Weekly Archive Dive No. 9

Welcome to installment No. 9 of ‘The Cob’s Archive Dive’, where each week, I’ll share Associated Press headlines and excerpts from past articles printed in the Falls City Journal. No matter what your age, hopefully you’ll find a piece of Husker football history that makes you feel…….

NU Position Groups 2026 – Defensive Tackles

I know two things about football. Winning is fun, and it sucks to lose. Even though the Huskers were on the winning side of things last season with a 7-6 record, there wasn’t much fun. With the departure of Nash Hutmacher, Ty Robinson, and D-Line coach Terrance Knighton…….

Tikey Lasted Longer than Minchey

And just like that, he’s gone. Running back Tikey Hayes, the latest portal addition, has been dismissed from the Nebraska football team. After approximately one month and nine practices Hayes was shown the door. Well, he was a Husker longer than quarterback Kenny Minchey was anyway…….

Chambliss on the Butkus Watch List

It was announced last Thursday that Nebraska linebacker Owen Chambliss has been named to the Butkus Award Watch list. Chambliss is one of 51 linebackers to be placed on the list. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top linebacker. The 51-player list is named in honor…….

NU Position Groups 2026 – Wide Receivers

After the Huskers signed Kwazi Gilmer from UCLA out of the transfer portal, I said the wide receiver’s room was the best group on the team. That was six months ago, and nothing has changed to make me think differently. If anything, those thoughts have only been reinforced…….

NU Position Groups 2026 – Tight Ends

After listening to Dana Holgorsen last week, one of the biggest questions concerning Nebraska’s tight end room is how they’ll be used. Nebraska has never used tight ends, say like Iowa does, and Holgorsen hasn’t exactly made tight ends a focal point in his offenses. With Holgorsen’s “Air Raid”…….

NU Position Groups 2026 – Running Backs

The running back room is a hot topic, and not just recently. It goes all the way back to this time last season. How good is the running back room and how much depth is there? 365 days is plenty of time for fans and pundits alike……

Justin Evans One to Watch

It was announced last Thursday that Nebraska center Justin Evans has been added to the Remington Trophy watch list. For Nebraska fans it’s a big deal to think a Husker could possibly win the award named after Husker legend and Hall-of-Famer Dave Remington. The award……

LB Owen Chambliss – Simple, Fast, and Violent

I was a Rob Aurich fan the moment I heard him say in an early interview, “Our defensive motto is, Simple, Fast, and Violent.” When I heard him say that, I thought, those have to be three of the sweetest words a defensive player could hear…….

Colandrea Knows How He Wants to Play the Game

We heard from ten players on Tuesday as they met with the media, five from the offense and five from defense. Players giving interviews included Anthony Colandrea, Jacory Barney Jr., Nyziah Hunter, T.J. Lateef, Paul Mubenga, Riley Van Poppel, Cam Lenhardt, Owen Chambliss, Donavan Jones, and Jamir Conn……

B1G Coaches – What’s Cooking?

IWe always want to talk about coaches on the hotseat, so let’s go over all eighteen coaches in the Big Ten and where they sit. Right, wrong or otherwise, this is the ‘Cob’s’ take. Two coaches whose contracts are Fahrenheit 451 because of how hot their seats are…….

Get Rich Quick

I’ve said it since day one – Matt Rhule is the right man for Nebraska. If you’ve followed Nebraska football at all, whether it’s been for five years, ten, twenty, or fifty, how can you not think that. What his predecessors (Riley and Frost) did pales in comparison. Rhule has……

B1G Media Day Crickets

Big Ten media days has come and gone and now we can get ready for the season. Coaches report August 2nd, players August 5th, and Fan Day will be August 8th. I don’t know about y’all. But I’m ready for the season to be here. Why? Because I like……

NU Position Groups 2026 – Offensive Line

Last season in July I posted an article proclaiming Nebraska’s offensive line would be the heart of the team in 2025. It’s hard to say I was right on that one, but then again, what position group could you say that about last season? I do know that I put……

NU Roster 2026 – Updated

NU Roster 2026 – Updated Ten days ago, I posted NU’s 117-man roster. Well, with Big Ten Media Days going down, Nebraska released its latest roster. There are a few changes but nothing major. One is they have dropped some of the positions groups, instead ……

Nebraska’s Win-Loss Record, Going Off the Cob

I call my website “Off the Cob”. Which means, when it comes to Cornhusker football, my views seldom align with mainstream thinking. My thoughts often aren’t popular and are seen as unconventional or off base. I’m good with that. And as usual, here I am again….

NU Position Groups 2026, Quarterbacks

As is the case with almost every position on Nebraska’s roster this season, this is the best quarterback room Matt Rhule has had since coming to Lincoln. Some may want to dispute that with former 5-Star QB Dylan Raiola on the roster last season, but whatever impact…

11 Players Who will Make a Difference in 2026 Because of Development

There are several players we’ve been watching and waiting to explode onto the scene. So, what’s been holding them back? The lack of development. Rhule has stated since the beginning he wanted to be a developmental program. Over the last three years it hasn’t happened. Well, to be fair,….

Fans Wanted Another Running Back

Happy Birthday USA and Nebraska Football

Today is the 4 of July and the United States is celebrating 250 years of independence. Fifty years ago, 1976, we celebrated our 200th year of Independence. For some reason it seemed like a much bigger deal then. Was it because I was only 16, was their more American……

Flipping the Edge

It’s no secret edge rushers were a priority target for the Husker in 2027. As of now they have one commit in the class, and they had to flip him from Minnesota. Ma’ateo Moe, who is 6’3” 245-pounds was a big get for the Huskers. Prior to Moe……

Go Back Matt, do it Again

Nebraska was able to get 2027 quarterback Trae Taylor to commit in May of 2025, over a year ago. Several teams thought Nebraska settled on Taylor too soon. While Taylor showed promise he hadn’t yet fully developed, especially physically. Other teams showed interest but weren’t willing to go……

Recruiting, Will 21 be the Final Count

Nebraska picked up their 20th and 21st commitments over the last two days. Will that be the final count? I don’t think so and with the roll the huskers have been on, I don’t see them being finished. Rhule and his staff have been on fire, picking up 11……

Change is Inevitable, Some Long Overdue

The University of Nebraska football team revealed new uniforms yesterday after the 7-on-7 championship ‘Battle at the Boneyard’. The Husker faithful is abuzz on social media about the new look, and I’ve heard a little of everything, most of it negative. Change can be hard and messing with your…….

A Small-Town Newspaper and Big Red Football

Aurich’s Revamp of the Blackshirts Begins

Since the college football playoffs started, strength of schedule has been a constant talking point for fans, media, and the selection committee. The big discussion now is expanding from 12 to 24 teams. Right now, it looks like we will remain at 12 and have the opportunity as fans…….

Kernels From the Cob No. 2-26

I love college football, and while I’m a Cornhusker fan through and through, I follow college football on a whole. There is very little that can happen in the college football world that doesn’t influence the Huskers in some way, so staying up to speed is something I attempt……..

Recruiting: The 105-Man Roster Still Matters

You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating, June is a huge month for Nebraska recruiting. With the list of visitors increasing each week and Nebraska continuing to make offers, June becomes increasingly important. As of now, from June 5th to the 19th the Huskers will receive………

Wade Brings Georgia to Nebraska

Georgia Tech was home for Geep Wade for three years before coming to Nebraska. As the offensive line coach from 2023 through 2025, Wade developed offensive lines that were highly successful at both run and pass blocking. They established numbers like seventh nationally in fewest sacks………

Matt Rhule and the Huskers, from Bad to Good

Picture this. Matt Rhule is sitting on a large bull in a recruiting photo shoot before the 2025 season. Seeing it isn’t hard to imagine since it happened. Now picture this, Rhule sitting on the same bull holding a sign that says, “2-10 in November” as the bull………

Nail Down the Visits and Let it Rain

Nebraska football unexpectedly struck gold yesterday when they picked up their ninth commitment in the 2027 class. Jordan Agbanoma announced on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show he was committing to the University of Nebraska. Agbanoma’s commitment is a big coup for offensive line coach Geep Wade and Matt Rhule as………

Football Fiction

Athlon Sports recently released an article about Big Ten coaches talking anonymously about conference foes for 2026. While it’s obviously a fluff piece it’s certainly picked up steam and gave the media world something to talk about. I’ve heard it discussed on 93.7 The Ticket’s Early Break……….

Silver Spoons

Recent reports have stated that Ohio State and Oregon have spent $50 million plus on their rosters. Steve Sipple of ‘HuskerOnline’ wrote a column talking about what that means and how fans perhaps aren’t taking NIL into account and treating Rhule unfairly. According to Sip, Rhule should be unhappy……….

Filling the Gaps in the 2026 Class

Nebraska has added new players to the 2026 class over the last four months, strengthening a couple of positions, one was needed, the others are perhaps luxuries. The additions come well after National Signing Day, which in the current recruiting landscape isn’t unusual. However, the player’s Nebraska has added……….

Where Are Nebraska Fan’s Heads

I recently read an article by Nate McHugh of SB Nation that stated the last two “sure things” to bring Nebraska football back failed. The first “thing” is back coaching at UCF, and the second “thing” is now wearing an Oregon uniform. Because these two “sure things” failed……….

Kernels From the Cob

Talking season is here, spring football is over and we are over 100 days away from fall camp. As football fans all that is left is to follow recruiting and argue over everyone’s Post Spring Top 25 and three months from now their Preseason Top 25. Several rankings are out……….

Big Swings, Big Misses

With it being the offseason one of the things we focus on at this time of year is recruiting. Husker coaches are making visits and trying to schedule official visits throughout June and around the ‘Battle of the Boneyard.’ What’s easy to forget is the fact that even if a……….

Nebraska’s Up Hill Climb

There are two big measuring sticks for success in college football. First, your win loss record. Second, the number of players you have selected in the NFL draft. It’s no secret that the Nebraska Cornhuskers are struggling at both, and we witnessed it again this past weekend………

Yay or Nay on the Big Red Rebuild

One of the first things current Athletic Director Troy Dannan did when arriving in Lincoln was to put predecessor Trev Albert’s stadium renovation on hold. Albert’s plans were met with concerns due to donor support and financial stability. Dannen said at the time, ‘We’re not going to take anything to……..

Depth Will Play a Key Role in 2026

Since NIL was implemented, an old saying has taken on new meaning. I can’t say I’ve heard Matt Rhule say it, but I know he is aware of it and has at times suggested it’s something that needs to happen with his team. “Get old and stay old.” Meaning……..

Who Will the 2026 Husker Team Be?

If you’re a Husker fan and have followed Nebraska football, then you are familiar with the name Damon Benning. Damon was a Husker and a member of the 1994-95 National Championships teams. He now works as color analyst on the Husker Radio Network with play-by-play announcer……..

For Nebraska Early Spring Means Early Adjustments

There was plenty of bellyaching from fans about Nebraska’s early spring game. With Fred Hoiberg’s success basketball and football overlapped, something Husker fans haven’t dealt with before. But there’s something fans need to consider. With spring practice over and a spring game in the books, coaches were given time……..

High Stakes Recruiting – the Big List

June looks to be a monster month for Nebraska when it comes to recruiting as the Huskers look to add to their commitment list. Nebraska’s 2027 class is currently ranked the 10th best class nationally but with over 50 visitors over the last two weeks……..

The DNA of Winning Football

When head coach Matt Rhule took over the Nebraska football program he had one goal in mind. Win football games. It’s a single-minded straight-line goal. But the path to getting there resembles a coiled double helix chain of cells known as DNA. Yes, over the last eleven seasons winning……..

The Cob’s Spring Game Take

For those who did not watch or attend the Spring Game, and by all accounts there seems to be several of you, Nebraska’s Spring Game was played on Saturday with the Nebraska team defeating the Husker team 22-17. Yes, an actual scrimmage was held rather than the joke we…….

Shout Out to Husker Men’s Basketball

Things didn’t go the way Husker fans and Fed Hoiberg’s team wanted in Houston Thursday night, losing to Big Ten rival Iowa 77-71. It’s rough to take, but you can’t be upset with this Husker team. In my view they are one of the greatest Nebraska basketball……

Hoiberg Increases Pressure on Rhule

Nebraska basketball history is being made. Not only have the Huskers won their first NCAA tournament game, but they have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time, and with a matchup against Iowa, a team they defeated a couple of weeks ago, they could make the Elite……

The 2027 Class, Who’s Next

Nebraska added their seventh commitment to the 2027 class Friday when wide receiver Kaden Howard announced he would join the Huskers. The 5’10”, 160-pound 3-Star comes from Palmetto High School in Miami, the same school as current Husker Jacory Barney. Howard had offers from Minnesota, Louisville, Missouri……

Pigskin Recruiting Watch

Last week was spring break and everything concerning football has come to a screeching halt. But players will be back Sunday evening and there will be five more practices before the Red-White Spring game on Saturday the 28^th. Real football is back and thank goodness……

The Future of Husker Football

It is a unique time in Nebraska football. A week before the Red-White spring game and all is quiet. The focus of Husker fans is on other sports. Both men’s and women’s basketball are in the NCAA Tournament. The baseball and softball teams are off to a good start……

The Big Red Monster

You will sometimes here people say, “He was born for it.” There is some truth in that. I’m sure I was born for something, but I can’t tell you off the top of my head what that might be. What I will tell you is this, love him or…..

The Passing of a Coach

He started out as a Honey Creek Wildcat, playing at a small country school in the southeastern corner of Nebraska. It was in the mid-fifties and at the time, Honey Creek was a powerhouse in both basketball and football. They played in the Little Eight Conference, consisting of Honey Creek….

One Key Left for 2027 Recruits

It was a big weekend for Nebraska football as they hosted a group of 2027 and 2028 recruits that have the potential to vault the Huskers into the top of the Big Ten. The new coaching staff is taking big swings towards top-tier talent. While many coaches try….

Three Quarterbacks, Three Words

A short history lesson for Husker fans. In 1924 sportswriter Grantland Rice created the legendary “Four Horseman.” His column that day included this passage. Outlined against a blue-gray October sky the Four Horseman rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These…

Stacking the Deck

The landscape of college football is ever changing. It has always been the objective of coaches to build depth at every position. But with NIL and the transfer portal, that is becoming increasingly more difficult. Players who stand out are offered better opportunities, making it harder to retain…..

Maher a Sound Choice

I’ve often criticized Matt Rhule for his hires. And probably unjustly, as often it’s after the fact. I wasn’t a fan of his hiring a young inexperienced coach with no answers to something he’d never seen before. I was even less of a fan of his hiring a high…..

Finally, Coaches Who Sound Like Coaches: Part 2

As I stated before, early in year one Rhule told us about some advice he once got from coaching legends Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells, “Your first staff is never your best staff. It’s usually about two years in when……

Finally, Coaches Who Sound Like Coaches: Part 1

Early in year one Rhule told us about some advice he once got from coaching legends Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells, “Your first staff is never your best staff. It’s usually about two years in when you figure out who everybody is and what they need.” I believe……

Rhule Isn’t Among Hot Seat Coaches in 2026

Even though spring practice has started for the Huskers we have entered that time of year when lists are being created. Pre-season top twenty-five, top ten FBS quarterbacks, ranking the quarterbacks in the Big Ten, and of course, coaches on the hot seat going into the 2026 season…..

Mighty Rhule Steps to the Plate

Tomorrow I’ll post my list of coaches who won’t survive another losing season, coaches under the microscope, and coaches who will more than likely be on the move. You won’t find Matt Rhule anywhere on my list. So, where does he fall on my list of coaches? He is……

Without Doubt, It’s an Improved Quarterback Room

You may be tired of hearing it, but I’m going to continue to say this Nebraska team has the talent to win in the Big Ten. I hear fans whine constantly that Nebraska isn’t getting the best players available. “Why didn’t we get Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby……

A Quick Take on the Spring Presser

Thursday afternoon Matt Rhule kicked off the beginning of spring practice with a press conference. It’s the first time Husker fans have heard from Rhule in close to 50 days. A bit unusual for the man who likes to talk. But fans are tired of talk. They are ready…….

Going into Spring it All Starts at Linebacker

One of the big topics over the last couple of weeks has been identifying which position group needs to improve the most going into the 2026 season. It’s not unusual for people to call out the offensive line. Others quickly point out the defensive line and how they……

Bill Moos Validates What Nebraska Fans Already Knew

Former Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos just released his memoir titled “Crab Creek Chronicles from the Wheat Fields to the Ball Fields and Beyond.” Since its release Moos has done multiple guest appearances on Nebraska radio shows and podcasts revealing events about his time as AD at…..

First Step in Returning to a Legacy

There isn’t enough talk in Husker Nation about what Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson accomplished this season. Yes, we all puff our chest out with pride for Johnson being named the Ameche-Dayne Big Ten Running Back of the Year. And yes, we are quick to point our……

Roster After Signing Day

The current Husker Roster lists 115 players. Taking 105 into account, that puts the Huskers ten players over the limit, however there are some exceptions due to the grandfathering in some players. But at this point going into spring ball that’s good because there will be some natural attrition. And…

One Step forward, Two Steps Back for the Huskers

Over the last week the Huskers have been riding the waves, signing new recruits like defensive tackle Dylan Berymon and losing quarterback Tanner Vibabul to James Madison. But it hasn’t just been players, there has been coaching turnover as well. Former special teams coach Josh Martin…

Nebraska Rounds Out the 2026 Class

February 4^th, national signing day, was once one of the biggest days in college football, but NIL and the transfer portal have reduced the event to almost another day. I say almost because the Huskers scrambled late into Tuesday evening to sign four-star defensive tackle Dylan Berymon. As of Wednesday…

Co-Coordinators Will Attempt to Keep Special Teams on Track

When Matt Rhule first announced special team coordinator Mike Ekeler was leaving the program he made it clear he would fill the position from within. Husker fans immediately made a list of three names, Josh Martin, Brett Maher, and Nick Humphrey. All three had strong qualifications…

Nebraska’s 2026 Schedule, 3 Games That Will Define the Season

I’ve often been told, “You’re a glass half empty guy aren’t you.” Umm … maybe, but what I can tell you is, I’m one of those people that usually answers a question with a question. My question, “What’s in the glass?” For me, a legitimate response, because..

It’s Not Just Jimmy’s and Joe’s

Anybody that follows me will be tired of hearing this, but winning football games takes much more than athletic talent. For me, it’s more about X’s and O’s than Jimmy’s and Joe’s. And when I say X’s and O’s, I’m also talking about coaches who can develop…

Snapshot of the Roster 01/24/26

I’ll admit, it’s probably way too soon to do this, but if you’re a Husker fan like I am then you want to know what the roster looks like headed into the new spring practice date. Also, as a fan, it’s too easy to convince yourself……

Trae Taylor Takes His Commitment to the Next Level

After Monday night you no longer must Google Curt Cignetti to know he is a winner. After Wednesday morning, if you were to Google the word commitment, the name of future Husker ‘Trae Taylor’ may very well pop up. But I need to correct myself. As far as Husker…….

A Defiant Rhule Finally Emerges

Matt Rhule and his Nebraska Cornhuskers enter a fourth season in 2026. It’s taken a while, but we are starting to see the Matt Rhule needed at Nebraska. I’ve said all along Rhule can’t be compared to Osborne and other top coaches. Heck, his resume pales in comparison to……..

The Final Take on Dylan Raiola

I’m one for moving on. So, I’m going to share my final thoughts on Dylan Raiola going to Oregon and then I won’t broach the subject again. I wish him well. But it’s hard for me to get too busted up over him leaving. Frankly, I think Nebraska is better……..

All is Right Again – Or Is It

Last Friday night, almost a week after Oregon, my Nebraska football world finally fell back in sync. After a meltdown and a reboot on my part, I’m back to where I was pre-Indiana. Thank goodness reality slapped me in the face and woke me up. Then week 8 happened…

A Learning Lesson for Rob Aurich and the Blackshirts

Who do you point a finger at in the Oregon debacle? It’s nobody’s fault. It’s everybody’s fault. The loss against Oregon was a team loss. You can’t point at the offense, the defense, or the special teams and say ‘they cost you the game’….

The Cob’s Best Games Week 8

I said last week to look for more movement as we enter the second half of the schedule, and after week 7 that’s exactly what we got. Five of the top seven teams in the AP Poll rankings lost last weekend. No.1 Georgia lost to Auburn,…
