Big Ten Media Days, a Recruit, a Walk-on, and a Transfer

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Although Big Ten Media Days is still more than 30 days away, Nebraska announced Wednesday the names of the players that will be accompanying Matt Rhule to Chicago. The three Seniors who will represent the Huskers in the Windy City for the July 30th event are Luke Lindenmeyer, Justin Evans, and Andrew Marshall.

Last year the event was held in Las Vegas and Nebraska took four players, Dylan Raiola, Henry Lutovsky, Marques Buford, and DeShon Singleton. Raiola was the only one of the four who was not a senior.

This year Nebraska is one of just six Big Ten schools that didn’t bring a quarterback to the event. Others were Northwestern, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Rutgers. Of the six schools only Rutger’s Anthan Kaliakmanis has taken a game snap for his team.

Nebraska’s Anthony Colderea, Northwestern’s Aiden Childs, Iowa’s Jeremy Hecklinski, Indiana’s Josh Hoover, and Wisconsin’s Colton Joseph are all new to their teams. Illinois’s Katin Houser and Penn State’s Rocco Becht are also new to their schools but will represent their teams in Chicago.

This year Matt Rhule made three solid picks that are an integral part of the Huskers, each starting all 13 games during the 2025 season. They are examples of the head down, hardworking, no-nonsense leaders that Rhule wants and needs. They will show up at Media Days without bluster, showing confidence in their coaches and teammates while displaying their expectations for the season.

Just as in the game itself, it all starts with center Justin Evans, who started his career at left guard and took over at center after Ben Scott graduated. Having 31 starts and 38 appearances as a Husker, the under-appreciated recruit has proven to be one of the most consistent linemen Nebraska has had over the past three seasons. He’s the only lineman not to surrender a single sack last season, a strong statement considering the offensive line gave up 22 total sacks. Evans has always led by example and hard work rather than being vocal. This spring and summer he’s made a concentrated effort to become a vocal leader as well. He’ll take that endeavor another step further in Chicago.

Evans has embraced the responsibility of a leader and if he stays healthy, he’ll finish his Husker career with over 40 starts. It’s that on-field production and effort that earned him a platform at Big Ten Media Days and will make him one of the top draft-eligible centers when he finishes his Husker career.

While Evans was recruited to Nebraska, Lindenmeyer began his career as a walk-on. Outgoing and personable, well-liked by both coaches and teammates and respected for his work ethic and the path he has taken to become a starter, he’s now one of the leaders of the team. The Nebraska native just completed his best season, with 29 receptions, 312 receiving yards, and two touchdowns.

Clearly Nebraska’s most balanced tight end, Lindenmeyer could see a substantial uptick in production with Anthony Colandrea at quarterback. Those expectations along with the respect he has earned within the program made him a natural selection to represent the Huskers at Big Ten Media Days.

One recruit, one walk-on, and Andrew Marsahll the transfer. Marshall is an example of what every transfer player hopes for, moving up in competition and becoming a starter and a leader in his new defense. With another season like his last, he’ll become a perfect example for Matt Rhule when recruiting transfer players.

Marshall started his career at Idaho appearing in 26 games and starting in 14. Once at Nebraska he established himself and started all 13 games last season, helping the Huskers finish the season ranked third in pass defense nationally.

Projected to again be one of the starting corners, he’ll be a key piece of Nebraska’s secondary this fall. He finds himself reunited with defensive coordinator Rob Aurich and along with safety Dwayne McDougle, they’ll lead Nebraska’s secondary.

Marshall’s performance in his first season and expectations of what coaches foresee of him heading into 2026 made him a natural selection to represent the team at Big Ten Media Days.

Evans the recruit, Lindenmeyer the walk-on, Marshall the transfer, three leaders, one goal.
